guessthe4 is a small daily game, run from the Netherlands. We collect as little as possible. No accounts, no cookies, no advertising and no tracking.

What stays on your device

The game saves on your device (local storage in your browser): your answers and progress of the day, your streak, your language, theme and sound setting and, if you post your score to the leaderboard, your nickname and nationality. It also holds a random player number that the game makes up itself. It is not linked to your name or e-mail address. You can clear all of this by clearing the site data in your browser.

What we receive when you play

When you finish the four rounds, the game sends our statistics server: the random player number, the number of the day, your points per round and the guesses you typed (answers with offensive words or personal details are thrown away). We use this only to show how many people guessed right, the average score and how many players there are, and to count each player once a day. This data is deleted automatically after 45 days.

The leaderboard (optional)

You only appear on the leaderboard if you choose to post your score. Then everyone can see your nickname (or a neutral name such as Player 1234 if you leave it empty), the flag of the nationality you choose and your total points for that day. Don’t use your real name or personal details as a nickname. You can change your nickname and nationality at any time; the entry is deleted automatically after 45 days. To have an entry removed sooner, write to us.

Messages you send us

If you send a suggestion or message through the menu, we receive the text you typed, the category, the language and the day number. We do not store your e-mail address or other identifying data, so don’t put personal details in the text. Messages are kept until we have handled and deleted them; at most the newest 1,000 are kept.

Hosting and technical data

The site and the statistics server run on Cloudflare. To deliver the pages and protect them against abuse, Cloudflare handles technical data such as your IP address; we do not receive or store IP addresses ourselves (the server only holds them in memory for a short time to limit how often messages can be sent). The game does not use cookies.

guess4+ (if you buy it)

If you buy guess4+, you pay on the page of our payment partner. That partner sells guess4+ to you, handles the payment, the tax and the invoice, and sends you a code by e-mail. We never see your payment details or your e-mail address. When you enter the code in the game, the code and a random device number are sent to our server, which passes them on to the partner to check that the code is valid. We do not store them. The code stays on your device so that guess4+ stays active, and once a day the game checks again that it is still valid (for example after a refund). Earlier puzzles that you play with guess4+ stay on your device and are not sent to us.

Advertising

At the moment guessthe4 shows no advertising and uses no tracking or analytics of ours. If we add advertising later, we will update this page first and ask for your consent where the law requires it.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you may ask to see, correct or delete your data, and object to its use. Because we cannot tell who a random player number belongs to, we can only help with entries that you can point out to us, such as a leaderboard nickname with the day. Write to us at the address below. You also have the right to complain to your national data protection authority (in the Netherlands: the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens).

Children

The game is meant for everybody. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children; please do not use a real name as a nickname.

Changes

If this statement changes, the date at the top changes too.
